Using Oral Assessments to Reveal Student Understanding in the lab

How can we determine whether students truly understand the chemistry behind their laboratory results? Traditional laboratory assessments, including lab reports, worksheets, and Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) responses, provide valuable information about student learning, but they may not always reveal how students arrive at their conclusions.
